By Diane Chase One of many wonderful things about living near Lake Placid is the quality and quantity of sporting activity my children are exposed to. I realize that contact sports are the American pastime but what about endurance sports and the philosophy involved in becoming the best that you can be. I would like my children to see these Olympians, not as unattainable celebrities but as dedicated athletes. Wouldn’t it be nice for all children to have the epiphany that with hard work they too can accomplish anything? This weekend, across the globe, participating cities will be hosting the annual event, Olympic Day, to celebrate the formation of the modern day Olympic games as well as encouraging fitness through the Olympic ideals, which are “Fair Play, Perseverance, Respect and Sportsmanship. “

By Diane Chase This weekend is FREE fishing weekend around New York State. This is an opportunity for anyone to try fishing and not have to worry about getting a fishing license. One place for kids to fish all season is Lake Steven in Wilmington, This small pond is specifically stocked for children and family members with disabilities.

There are many opportunities for mountain biking in the Adirondacks but Whiteface Mountain in Wilmington will be the place to be for a range of events and activities for all level of mountain biker. The Bike Fest Village will open on Saturday and Sunday at 7:00 a.m. and is free to all. Clinics, demo days, children activities and live entertainment will be just a portion of what will be happening around Whiteface Mountain Bike Park on Whiteface Mountain in Wilmington. By Diane Chase The Adirondack Folk School   in Lake Luzerne will be showcasing its new pavilion and blacksmith forge this weekend with free blacksmithing demonstrations on June 18th.   The school is located at the former Town of Lake Luzerne town hall building.  Classes in traditional Adirondack arts such as basketry and twig/rustic furniture building are available as well as other folk art traditions such as weaving, ceramics, quilting and fly tying.   all photos: Adirondack Folk School blacksmithing class photo credit: Jim Mandle,  Adirondack Folk School The Adirondack Folk School is located on Main Street in Lake Luzerne.
