Adirondack Coast Hikes: Pointe Au Roche State Park Nature Trail, Museum, Playground and Beach

Image
Pointe Au Roche State Park Trail Map We have been traveling to Plattsburgh to visit two friends of ours on a weekly basis. In order to have a calm beneficial visit I take the advice of a woman I know who raised six sons. “Run them like dogs,” she said when I would wonder how to manage two kids. So, now quite a few years later, I still think of that advice and am always looking for a place to expel their excess energy. Not so surprising it is usually the adults that need to indulge in some old-fashioned play and use the kids as an excuse to do it. Pointe Au Roche State Park is just a short drive from Plattsburgh and an easy jaunt for anyone visiting the area. With over 800 acres it is a unique combination of forest, marsh and shoreline. It has an interesting history that still can be seen skulking in the landscape. The land was first cleared and used agriculturally and then during WWI as a training site (similar to ROTC) for young men. The parcel then became a variety of businesses ...

Ski or Ride FREE with NYS Third and Fourth Grader Passport

Image
This Adirondack Mama always thinks that I have stumbled upon the deal of the century, only to find that everyone is already in on the family fun. So just in case I am not the last person to find out that New York State is once again offering the FREE Ski and Ride Passport Program to all third (3rd) and fourth (4th) grade children, I’m here to let you in on the secret. The program was first established in 2000 to introduce children to skiing and promote a healthy lifestyle choice. The passport offers free lift tickets to 31  New York ski mountains including 7 Adirondack ski resorts and other discounts like soft drink coupons. Personally, the beverage option seems to cancel out the healthy lifestyle choice. On the other hand, perhaps it may help encourage a child to get off the couch and onto the slopes.

Saranac Lake, Lake Placid, Tupper Lake for Kids: 4 FREE events

Image
By Diane Chase Most of the time we find there is too much we want to do on the weekend. I am not referring to our garden, the deer, moles and now resident mutant woodchuck. I have heard that groundhogs like dandelions. If so, they have moved to the right yard. If only it would stick to its side of the garden. At some point we need to take a break from the battle for our yard and take our minds off all the housework. The issue for us is how can we get to all the activities we want to do. On May 21st there are four free events that come to mind for people with families. Now is the time to trade in those bicycle helmets and participate in the annual Saranac Lake Bicycle Rodeo at the SL Civic Center from 10:00 a.m. – noon. At 11:00 a.m. Pendragon Theatre is hosting the Colgate Children Theatre Workshop with a FREE performance of “They Say Her Name Is Alice,” based on Alice in Wonderland. It’s just general seating so get there a bit early.

Lions and Rotary Club volunteers stage Tupper Lake’s first “Fire and Ice” winter golf event on February 12 at the Tupper Lake Municipal Park. The Tupper Lake Municipal Park and a number of acres of frozen Raquette Pond will be the setting for the “Fire and Ice” play beginning at noon and running until 4p.m.. Kids will love the miniature “putt-putt” course fashioned by organizers on the lakeshore area later this week. The putters and flags to mark the holes have been donated by Shaheen’s Motel, from its summer miniature golf operation.

Fun with Kids in the Adirondacks Long Lake Sledding

Image
Mt. Sabattis is Long Lake's free sledding hill next to the Geiger Arena.  This is a great place to spend a few hours or a good portion of your day. There is also free ice skating available.  One suggestion: post one person at the top of the ridge at the bottom of the hill between your children and the street.  A long walk up Mt. Sabattis sledding hill in Long Lake Getting the boot A slippery slide!

Adirondack Fun: Spring May Faire

Image
Sometimes my children seem to forget that spring is a season. To them it seems more pit stop to summer than an event of its own. After a long winter, that seemed to want to continue with those late snowfalls, our house is a rush of summertime activity. My children want to discontinue jackets while one even attempts to boycott long pants. I am afraid to pack up the boots and coats because last time I stored the winter gear it snowed. I am just superstitious enough to believe that there is a connection. The 1st annual Daffest will be a wonderful way to really cement the idea that spring deserves celebrating on its own. Saranac Lake’s new community event will paint the town yellow in 2011. Pathways and parks will be a bloom of color. Over a million bulbs will be planted this fall out and around Saranac Lake. To find out how to help, please go to daffest.com. Bulbs are available for purchase at a variety of sponsorship and donor levels. After a long winter a million daffodils will be a wel...
