Special Olympics Polar Plunge Lake George and Plattsburgh

Image
Just when you think its time to pack away the swim gear and pull out the skis, its time for the annual Polar Plunge in Lake George and Plattsburgh benefiting the Special Olympics. I am not one to actually take the required dip, but hold vigorously to my role as spectator when it comes to braving any Adirondack water in November.
From the Finger Lakes to Lake Champlain and Lake George to Staten Island there are 14 Polar Plunge events scheduled with ones in Plattsburgh and Lake George on November 14. Lake George’s Polar Plunge will kick off from Shepard’s Park while the Plattsburgh participants will brave a chilly Lake Champlain from City Beach.
When I spoke with Special Olympics Development Specialist Erin McCartan in 2014 she reminded me that there are local, regional as well as traveling (away) events. These Special Olympians are never charged and there is no age restriction. There are some athletes that have been participating for the last 50 years.

Lake Placid/Saranac Lake: Ski and Skate Swaps and Winter Consignment Time!

Image
Sixty-degree weather in November is not the way to get my family prepared for the winter season.  My kids are not focusing on snow. They are getting in those last few hatless days and breaking out shorts and dresses I’ve long packed away. Even though it may not feel like winter is just around the corner, it is the time to go through the old gear and start searching for the new or slightly used winter paraphernalia.  Since Adirondack weather can be unpredictable I want to make sure my family is outfitted for outside fun when the snow is finally here to stay. We are also always looking for bargains and the local ski clubs swaps and consignment shops are certainly places worth stopping by.
Mt Pisgah’s annual Ski and Skate Swap will be taking place November 14, 9-11 a.m. with equipment drop-off on Friday, November 13 from 5-8 p.m. The whole event takes place at the Mt. Pisgah Lodge, 92 Pisgah Rd, Saranac Lake. Keep in mind that only current winter gear will be accepted, no rear entry bo…

Easy Adirondack Hikes: Mt Gilligan (New Russia) Elizabethtown NY

Image
We are a family that is always on the go. I don’t over schedule my children, but they are involved, active kids. Though we may be going in different directions a lot of the time, one activity that always gives us a positive attitude adjustment is to get outside. Since we are such a busy family, we’ve always migrated to those shorter hikes that we can squeeze in on our way to another activity. (I also find these shorter hikes are a great way to see a beautiful view and still be back in time to have a nice dinner or take in a show.)
Mount Gilligan in New Russia (near Elizabethtown, NY) is just one of 58 easy hikes around the Adirondack Champlain Valley from my second Adirondack Family Time guidebooks. With an elevation of 1,421’ and a vertical ascent of 790’, this 1.1-mile hike to the summit offers numerous viewpoints along the way.
There is no parking directly next to the trailhead so the path really begins at the parking area. It is a nice walk over a bridge as we follow the dirt ro…
