Original Charlie Bucket (Peter Ostrum) to Speak at Lake Placid Film Forum

Meet the original Charlie Bucket at the Lake Placid Film Forum Gene Wilder Tribute Set For Lake Placid Film Forum Family Matinee The Adirondack Film Society opens this weekend with its annual Lake Placid Film Forum, June 7-11, 2017 with a mixture of international flavor, educational aspects, and a nod to its hometown Winter Olympic roots. Last night’s opening brought out locals and visitors alike to the Palace Theater for a free screening of “Eagle Eddy.”  With an impressive lineup of new and encore films, The Lake Placid Film Forum provides a distinctive international flavor to this wet, Adirondack spring.   With directors and producers coming as far afield as Moscow and Havana, one unique Adirondack aspect will be in the panel discussion at the Sunday free showing on the original version of “Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.”  With a nod to Gene Wilder, the Adirondack Film Society has procured the original Charlie Bucket, Dr. Peter Ostrum, to join the pan

Review: Lake Placid Community Theatre Players Presents Disney's The Little Mermaid (musical)

It’s a Magical Time Under the Sea with CPT’s The Little Mermaid (Saranac Lake) I’m a fan of Disney animated movies: good overcomes evil with a few plot twists, great songs and some underlying adult humor.  Last night I was fortunate to catch the dress rehearsal of The Community Theatre Players’ (CTP) performance of Disney’s The Little Mermaid. CTP has created a magical kingdom that transports the audience from an ocean of familiar characters to Prince Eric’s kingdom through their exquisite voices, imaginative sets, complex costumes and a sea of body puppets.  The word puppet is too limited a word to use. Sorensen and a team of people have merged costumes with puppets to blend actors into their characters. Similar to the work of Julie Taymor in Disney’s The Lion King, these hand-built puppets add charm to an already enchanting evening.  Directed by Matt Sorensen with choreography by Terpsie Toon and musical direction by Kimberly Weems, “The Little Mermaid” gathers a cast

Lake Placid (NY) Whiteface Memorial Veterans' Highway

There is a 360º view at the summit of Whiteface Mountain, including this view of Lake Placid.  The last time my car climbed Whiteface Mountain, the 5th highest peak in the Adirondacks,  I was with a friend who had climbed not only all 46 High Peaks but also many other mountains around the world. The view had been socked in and we were to meet a large group congregating at the summit to celebrate three new 46ers . Visibility was zero that day at the summit and I spent my time making sure my children didn’t plunge off the slippery slope into the clouds.   Whiteface Memorial Veterans Highway Toll Road winds around for 5 miles before reaching the summit.  Years later and my car has managed to do twice what I haven’t accomplished once, it climbed to the summit of the 4,867' tall Whiteface Mountain.  This time I check the Whiteface website to make sure my visitors and I are going to be able to see the 360-degree Adirondack panorama. It states 70 miles of visibility.
