Three Adirondack Owl Prowl Events

Image
For those of us not fortunate to have wildlife come to us, we need to go to the experts. This winter Adirondack raptor experts are offering opportunities to come across such majestic creatures as the snowy owl, or at the very least learn how to sight them on your own.

Adirondack Full Moon: Cross-Country Ski or Snowshoe Options for the Full Moon

Image
© Diane Chase, Adirondack Family Time By Diane Chase An Adirondack Full Moon Ski, Hike or Swim?  One Adirondack family activity we always enjoy is taking our cross-country skies and hitting a trail. The kids find it exciting and we get to experience nature in a new way.  You can take your family to enjoy a planned event or find a quiet place and have kids find out what animals are starting to wake up at night! Always bring a headlamp whether you are out on your favorite trail or participating in an organized event! Enjoy!

A Short History of Lake Pleasant, Adirondacks

Image
This video is about a small town located in Hamilton County, in the Southern Adirondacks, in the State of New York, in the United States of America. Narrated by Lake Pleasant Town Historian,"Anne Weaver", and Speculator Village Historian, "Bev Hoffman". All Pictures are provided by the Historical Society of Lake Pleasant and Speculator. This video was created for the opening of Lake Pleasant's Bicentennial, which was the year 2012.

Adirondack Irish Road Bowling

Image
Irish Road Bowling takes place on a country road, but beware the road is not usually blocked off to traffic.  Speculator, NY and Indian Lake are just two places that enjoy this St. Patrick's Day tradition!  Irish road bowling has been played in the Irish countryside since the 1600s.  Using a 28-oz iron or steel ball, called a bowl, or bullet is chucked down a country road to the finish. The player or team with the fewest shots at the finish line wins. The "course" can up to two miles long.

Adirondack Birding Festival Schedule Central Adirondacks

Image
The Adirondack Birding Festival is taking place throughout Hamilton County June 8-10, 2012.  Hamilton County is the third largest and least populated county in New York State. The county is entirely within the Adirondack State Park. Over 60% of our land area is either Wilderness or Wild Forest. There is not a single stop light in the entire county . The county’s million acres of forest, 1,500 miles of rivers and streams and over 56,000 acres of lakes and ponds provide birding and wildlife watching opportunities unequalled. Our towns and hamlets are located at 1,200 – 1,500 feet above sea-level and our mountains approach 4,000 feet. Normally in June we enjoy warm days and cool evenings. It could be hot. It could snow. Check the forecast before you come and bring clothing for a wide range of weather conditions and temperatures. Nesting birds, rising trout, rushing water, wildflowers and newborn of many species make the woods and waters of Hamilton County a place of spring...

Old Forge: Ski McCauley Mountain

Image
By Diane Chase, Adirondack Family Activities™   For a family mountain, Old Forge’s McCauley Mountain can’t be beat.  With an elevation of 2,330’ McCauley has something to offer everyone in our family.  The terrain park is the first thing we see as we pull into the parking area but we quickly pass it to the lifts and make the most of the day.  There is one double chairlift and one T-Bar that access all 20 trails and a Rope Tow for the Mighty Mite. The second T-Bar is at the terrain park area. My kids are well past the Mighty Mite but it is still sweet to see that special place right in the middle of the mountain for those beginner skiers.

Schroon Lake to Lake Placid: Ten Ideas for Winter Activities

I am often sent emails from people looking for activities to do with children or family members of all ages. I am honored to be able to suggest ideas. (My email is below but do to very unpleasant spammers I can't make it a live link.) Below are a few ideas from Schroon Lake to Lake Placid, along the "Adirondack Lake Champlain Coast. Inside activities: These suggestions all have some sort of cost: pan for gems at High Falls Gorge  518-946-2278 , Wilmington (also beautiful trails, waterfall), paint your own pottery at Brush On In, Lake Placid    518.523.6554 , go to the Essex County Fish Hatchery in Crown Point (for a few quarters the kids can feed the fish)  518) 597-3844 .  Ice skating  gets tricky this time of year. We have had so many melts and freezes. Schroon Lake and Ticonderoga flood the tennis/basketball courts or by the beach for an outdoor ice rink but that is not currently available but the playground at the Schroon Lake public beac...

Adirondack Family Fun: Adirondack Movie Theaters

Image
By Diane Chase One thing we like to do is to enjoy a small intimate theatre experience. Not just live theatre, though that plays (no pun intended) a prominent role in our lives. No, it’s escaping for a few hours and going to “The Movies.” At one time many towns in the Adirondacks had their own movie houses. Sadly most have made way for the multiplex. Some theatres have retained their original architecture so the movie is not always the only thing to observe. Take a moment and enjoy a small slice of history. Each theatre offers a unique experience that a larger cineplex may not. These theatres are independently owned and operated and can offer a less expensive ticket price.

Adirondack Museums: Goodsell Museum in Old Forge

Image
By Diane Chase The Goodsell Museum in Old Forge is free to the public and open all year. Visit the Floating Letters exhibit until October 31 st  or enjoy the other items that provide an historical blueprint of the area. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. At the Goodsell Museum children are encouraged to mix and mingle throughout the various exhibits. On the ground floor there are glass cases and cordoned-off taxidermy animals but a pack basket set to the side is marked with a yellow circle, handprint and “OK.”. Children know anything marked with that symbol is fair game. My children examine all the animal pelts gingerly and even try on a few fox collars. Upstairs they examine some medical equipment in a different “please touch box.”

Things to do in Inlet, NY: Adirondack Inlet's Fern Park

Image
By Diane Chase Fern Park in Inlet, New York (NY)  offers free skating, sledding, snowshoeing and cross-country ski trails for just a few winter ideas. Since we try to always be prepared, the back of our mini van looks like a traveling sports shop. Ice skates, snowshoes or skis are in the back. Helmets are at the ready. Kids play on around a snow maze Our family likes to see all sorts of places around the Adirondacks. Winter looks just a bit different in the High Peaks than it does in the Central Adirondacks. A visit to Inlet allows us many opportunities to play and enjoy the outdoors and all for free. The indoor ice rink has attached warming room and restrooms The Fern Park Ice Rink is free and open to the public every day from 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m (weather dependent). Fern Park Recreational Area in Inlet can be a full day activity for families or a quick stop for kids/children to release some pent-up energy.

Fun with Kids in the Adirondacks Long Lake Sledding

Image
Mt. Sabattis is Long Lake's free sledding hill next to the Geiger Arena.  This is a great place to spend a few hours or a good portion of your day. There is also free ice skating available.  One suggestion: post one person at the top of the ridge at the bottom of the hill between your children and the street.  A long walk up Mt. Sabattis sledding hill in Long Lake Getting the boot A slippery slide!
