“Red Army” Documentary skates into Lake Placid Film Forum November 7-8

Image
The Lake Placid Film Forum performed quite a coup in grabbing Gabe Polsky's film "Red Army" before its official national opening in New York next week. This award-winning film will be shown at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts for this weekend only, before being released to all major commercial movie houses.  Director Gabe Polsky, “Red Army” goes behind the Iron Curtain and tracks the Soviet Union’s hockey team domination to its unraveling at the Lake Placid 1980 Winter Olympic Games to its ultimate demise.  Co-Founder and Artistic Director Kathleen CarrolI first saw the ”Red Army” at a film screening during the New York Film Festival. She knew immediately that this would be an important film to show in Lake Placid with its focus on the Cold War Russian dominance of hockey, ties to the 1980 Winter Olympic Russian hockey team and the United States Olympic gold medal win, dubbed “The Miracle on Ice.” “I knew this film’s conn...

Adirondack Inside Public Skating

Image
Ice Skating is a fun Adirondack family activity that my family enjoys all winter long! When the weather outside is cold and the ice thickens on the Adirondack lakes and ponds, we take out skates with us.   Inside we have the opportunity to take off our skates, warm up our toes and listen to the music piped in over the sound system.  Here are some Adirondack Civic Centers . So strap on those skates and hit the ice!

Lake Placid: Village of Lights at the North Pole

Image
It has been a few years since I’ve been back to Santa’s Workshop in Wilmington, NY. My children are a bit older and getting too tall for most of the rides. Without sounding too much like the Grinch, I was feeling like the North Pole didn’t fit me quite right (most of the rides are for children 48” or smaller.) Well, thanks to a friend who was madly packing her children into her car to make it to Santa’s Workshop, we were reacquainted with the North Pole as a family with older children. Each Sunday in December as well as December 21-23 and 26-30, Santa’s Workshop puts on a special evening show with a Nativity Pageant under the evening sky. Holiday music surrounds the tiny village where elves are busily preparing for Christmas. Join in the caroling around the fire pit, or go to Jack Spratt’s Bakery to get your s’more kit (stick included.)    Of course, no visit is complete with out a stop to see the “jolly old elf.”

Lake Placid Fun: Take The Bobsled Experience

Image
By Diane Chase We aren't actually going on the bobsled, this time. My partner in crime does not meet the 48" height requirement and if heredity stays true, she won't be that tall for quite some time. We drop her brother at Mt Van Hoevenberg for a skate ski lesson and figure out how to entertain ourselves. I have a bum knee from a skiing mishap and she is hungry.  A short distance away is the Lake Placid Bobsled Experience . We are fortunate because busloads of people are being dropped off. Though you do need a ticket to enter the building, we ask if we can just watch a few runs while enjoying some hot chocolate from the snack bar.

Lake Placid: Bring A Sled For Adirondack Family Fun

Image
Our car in the winter looks like a sporting goods store. Ice skates, sleds and snowshoes are the standard elements for winter fun for our family in the Adirondacks.  Sledding in Lake Placid can be tricky. Though most people will go sledding on local golf courses, do realize that it is private property and you are considered a trespasser.  One of the wonderful things about an old fashioned sledding hill is anyone can do it from the youngest to eldest in your group.
