Bring in the 2011 New Year as part of Saranac Lake First Night ® at Will Roger's in Saranac Lake, just minutes from Lake Placid.  Join musical guests Dan Duggan and Peggy Lynn with their Adirondack style of bluegrass and folk music.  This program is open to the public as part of the First Night® Saranac Lake celebration.  A First Night Button is needed for members of the public and they will be available to purchase ($12) at the door.  Purchasing this button will allow you admission to all First Night activities.

Just ten minutes from Lake Placid, Saranac Lake will ring in the New Year with its fifth First Night® celebration.  Originating in Boston over 35 years ago, First Night originators wanted to provide non-alcohol related New Year’s Eve festivities. The arts centered event grew from a small community celebration to what now showcases Boston’s diverse culture and art. There are now 200 similarly modeled celebrations worldwide. Children try small jumps first By Diane Chase The 'Learn to Fly" Wednesday is back as the NYSEF coaching staff at the Olympic Ski Jumps in Lake Placid will have four fun ski jump clinics in 2011 on the hill of Vancouver Olympians Bill Demong and Peter Frenette. These clinics are open to all children. Date and Time: Wednesdays from 3:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. as follows: January 5, 12,18 (Tues) and 26th Location: Base Lodge of the Olympic Ski Jumps in Lake Placid, NY. Cost: First year jumpers are $5.00/session A successful clinic at the Lake Placid Olympic Ski Jumps Age: All athletes six-years and older with prior skiing experience Equipment: Alpine or XC skis and a helmet There will be plenty of snacks and hot chocolate to keep your little ones energized! Free Shakespeare in the Adirondack Park is on the road for its second year presenting live performances in various outdoor venues throughout the Park. For those in the Tri-Lakes it will all start tomorrow at White Pines Camp in Paul Smiths. The Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts in Blue Mountain Lake is bringing this performance to 20 towns within the Blue Line so don’t fret, there is plenty of opportunity to see this version of “Twelfth Night.” Last year’s performance of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” was a 45-minute romp within an Adirondack setting, lumberjacks and even a back-flipping Robin Goodfellow in snowshoes. This year’s play of mistaken identities will take us to a 1950s lakeside camp where Viola will find her way ashore during a 4th of July celebration. By Diane Chase Watching the Lake Placid Horse Show may be intimidating for anyone without a background in Show Jumping but don't let inexperience allow a wonderful event to pass by. (My horse experiences consist of trail rides on only the oldest and most gentle animals.) For a dollar you can take a walking tour and learn the ins and outs of jumping. The Lake Placid Horse Show Association offers weekday in-depth visits behind the scenes of the grounds. The tour meets in the vendor section of the horse grounds. Read More

Celebrating its 10th anniversary the Lake Placid Film Forum is showcasing women in the film industry, new directions in filmmaking and an environmental “green” focus in additional to its annual tribute to silent film. Opening night on June 10th will be a bargain for families at $10 for two Buster Keaton movies and a foreign short “Salim Baba.” The Keaton films will show his career in reverse starting with the 1965 “Railrodder” with a Q&A with the film’s director Gerry Potterton then segue to the 1924 silent film “Sherlock Jr.” Read More

It will be a sea of spandex suits, warming huts and waving flags. No, it’s not a comic book convention though the next two weeks will attract the same amount of hero worship. With twenty-one countries being represented in the 41st Luge World Championships, Lake Placid deserves a bit of fanfare. The first time the Worlds came to Lake Placid was 26 years ago. It was the first time the event had been held outside of Europe. Now it is back. The event is toted as the final major event for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. This is going to be a career builder or breaker for some. Some tricky areas for the sledders will be Cliffside, Labyrinth, Bendam’s Bend and Chicane. The organizers of the event are making it very user friendly. There are viewing areas set up around the track with television monitors showing the rest of the run. Ticket holders are not restricted to seats but allowed to walk all around to get various views. It is going to be exciting as people, competitors and ticket

My children are not quite of an age where I can hand them a few bills and send them off for a few hours. Thankfully most of us are eased into parenthood so these changes are gradual. I am always so grateful to find places for them to gain some independence but still be able to find me if necessary. I have never attended the Lake Placid Elementary School annual spring carnival and silent auction, but it seems the perfect place for the whole family to spread their wings, games for all and a silent auction for me. A long-standing tradition, the carnival is a fundraiser for FRIENDS (an acronym for Friends Really Interested in the Educational Needs and Development of Students), which raises money to provide funds for field trips, supplies and other student needs. Taking place this Saturday, June 7, from 10:00am-2:00pm, the carnival will host a mixture of games, activities and events. There is no fee to get in but some events range in price from .25-$2.50.
