Rain or Shine it’s Carnival Time

My children are not quite of an age where I can hand them a few bills and send them off for a few hours. Thankfully most of us are eased into parenthood so these changes are gradual. I am always so grateful to find places for them to gain some independence but still be able to find me if necessary. I have never attended the Lake Placid Elementary School annual spring carnival and silent auction, but it seems the perfect place for the whole family to spread their wings, games for all and a silent auction for me.

A long-standing tradition, the carnival is a fundraiser for FRIENDS (an acronym for Friends Really Interested in the Educational Needs and Development of Students), which raises money to provide funds for field trips, supplies and other student needs.

Taking place this Saturday, June 7, from 10:00am-2:00pm, the carnival will host a mixture of games, activities and events. There is no fee to get in but some events range in price from .25-$2.50. Just a few activities to look forward to are Avalanche Adventure’s Climbing Wall and Bounce House, the school staff manning the dunking booth (in case anyone wants to get their pitching arm in shape), the ORDA Virtual Simulation, the USA Luge practice track and other carnival games.

High Peaks Cyclery and the Lake Placid Police Department are co-sponsoring the Bicycle Rodeo portion of the carnival. Helmets and permission slips are required for all rides. All the bikes must go through a safety check conducted by High Peaks before being allowed on the obstacle course. Bike checks are carried out between 9:00- 10:00am only. All rodeo participants (2nd-5th grades) will be measured for a free bike helmet, compliments of the LP Police Benevolent Association.

Always an advocate for safety, I recommend taking advantage of the Masonic Lodge providing free IDs and fingerprinting for children.

The silent auction (with over $6,000 in donated goods and services) will end at 1:00 pm. Look for anything from camp certificates, memberships, restaurant and golf gift certificates, other products or even bid on being mayor for the day. In addition, each class decorated an Adirondack chair that is up for auction.

The LP Elementary School Carnival is located at 318 Old Military Rd, 10:00-2:00, rain or shine though some events are weather permitting.
