Saranac Lake Winter Carnival –Ten Days of Winter Fun

This winter has been a challenge for all winter sports lovers. Temperatures have fluctuated making anyone wanting to play in the snow have to look for new and creative ways to enjoy the chilly temps while exploring the Adirondacks.

The Saranac Lake’s Winter Carnival organizers know that Winter Carnival may take place in winter, but this  “must visit” event for Adirondack residents and visitors alike has always been at the beck and call of O'Man Winter. First started in 1897, the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival history is as vast and varied as the community that has shaped it.

“We try to introduce new events every year and keep the most popular,” says O’Neill. “This year we are offering a new twist on an old favorite. On Saturday, February 6, we are hosting the ‘Little Ladies Frying Pan Toss.’ The Ladies Frying Pan Toss has been a carnival favorite and now we will host the event for girls. We have two age groups: 8-12 year olds and 13-17 year olds. Most of the time people just show up to watch someone try to sling a frying pan. We want people to have more choices so ”

With over a century of experience to draw from, the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival is a ten-day festival of sports, races, parades, live performances and fireworks. Highlights include tubing races, Ultimate Frisbee, scavenger hunt, snowshoe races, curling and woodsmen exhibitions. The town also features an ice palace depicting each year’s annual motif. This year people can choose to show their Superhero or Villain side with their choice of button, the dance party or annual parade.

“If the weather isn’t cooperating it is always our mission is to find another way and make things work,” say O’Neill. “There have been years with major weather impact, but the tradition is to pull together and make things fun. Snow or ice, the events can be altered or changed. We have made things fluid for that reason.”

O’Neill realizes that the Adirondacks is always at the whim of Mother Nature so she encourages people to keep up to date with the latest schedule via the Winter Carnival website or Facebook page.

“I think Winter Carnival is important because it brings people that may not be sports-oriented outside to celebrate winter. It challenges them to do something they may not normally do. People tend to hibernate in the winter and this is an opportunity to try new things, see old friends and meet new people.”

Saranac Lake Winter Carnival starts Friday, February 5 and ends Sunday, February 14. Enjoy!
