Adirondack Family Time™

Once a month the staff of Fort  Ticonderoga will lead the  “Fort Fever Series” through April 2013.  When: Sundays  at 2:00.  Where: Deborah Clarke Mars Education Center at Fort  Ticonderoga .  Admission: $10 per person payable at the door; (members of the Friends of Fort  Ticonderoga  are free). The Geminids are usually the last and one of the most prolific meteor showers of the year. the August Perseids is the other major meteor shower.  This December 13-14, the new moon will provide a dark sky, better providing a grand backdrop for these showers. Also known as Falling Stars or Shooting Stars , a meteor shower appears as streaks of light when a meteorite enters the earth's atmosphere. A comet will pass too close to the sun and small bits of debris will break off leaving a trail of small pieces. When the earth rotates through the comet's path, these small pieces burn looking like falling stars. When? December 13-14 starting at dusk with good viewing starting around 9 EST and best viewing around 1 am on the 14th. What to wear? Dress warmly. It may not happen immediately.

Saranac Lake guidance counselor Jennifer Tissot has authored a book called “Everyone Has Feelings, A Book About Emotions For Young Children” with photography from middle-school teacher and professional photographer Karen Miemis .  The 20-page paperback book is simple in design with expressive photos of children demonstrating an array of emotions. Local kids fill the pages, expressing their best (and sometime worst) feelings from being happy to mad and everything in between. Jennifer gets right to the point, letting kids know “everyone has feelings” in a non-rhyming way. 

Each year Whiteface Mountain Ski Resort, located in Wilmington (outside of Lake Placid) in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains offers five Sundays featuring low-cost lift tickets! The Lake Placid Golden Skates Marathon, formerly known as the Lake Placid Marathon and the Dimon Sports Marathon, is a new event taking place in Lake Placid, NY on December 7-9 at the historic 400m Olympic Speed Skating Oval used during the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics, in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains. This new event is named for the hand-crafted 14-karat gold jewelry awards that the winning skaters (male and female) will receive, made by from Devillt Studios in Jay NY.

Lake Placid, NY presents its annual Holiday Village Stroll with many free activities, crafts for kids and movies. Take time to enjoy a wine tasting at The Pines Inn and get your parcels wrapped while children watch a holiday film. Ice Skat at the Olympic Center and search for the High Peaks Resort's Yule Log. Many thanks to the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) for this handy guide to New York State's salamander population. Did you know there are 18 species of salamanders?   Some of are even endangered list like the Eastern tiger salamander .
