Remembering 9/11

Image
According to the 9/11 Manhattan boat lift. (Narrated by Tom Hanks) "500,000 people evacuated in 9 hours. When the people fleeing the collapse hit the seawall, the men and women who work the water saw their fellow Americans in need and came full throttle.   They came on their own, they organized on their own and they achieved on their own. The largest sea evacuation in history - larger than the evacuation (339,000) at Dunkirk in WWII which took 9 days. These boats evacuated a half a million people in less than 9 hours." Remembering 9/11/01 New York magazine created this encyclopedia giving the following list of September 11  by numbers.  It is a visual way to show your children how the 9/11 attacks and the fall of the Twin Towers in New York City created such devastation.  Total number killed in attacks (official figure as of 9/5/02):  2,819 Number of firefighters and paramedics killed:  343 Number of NYPD officers:  23 Number of Port Authority police

Long Lake: Dinner and Walk At John Dillon Park

Image
By Diane Chase Last year my family and I attended the first annual John Dillon Park progressive dinner and walk. We had been under the impression that John Dillon Park was only available to people with disabilities. We were incorrect. The fully accessible campground is available to everyone, but manageable for someone with a disability.  This year the event takes place Sunday, September 16 from 3:30-6:30 pm. A parking attendant gestures us to a field cleared for temporary parking. A Paul Smith’s College bus picks us up and transports us to the welcome center and 1 st  station. There were five different stations spread out through the various campground lean-tos. My family grabs a drink at the first station and hits the trail. The paths are wide and lined with pea gravel. Some guests are in wheelchairs and easily maneuver through any obstacles. Others push strollers or walk the easily accessible trails. Signs help the flow of traffic to the next station.

Family Fun at Wilmington’s Festival of Colors

One way to celebrate this change of season is to attend Wilmington’s own Festival of Colors. With live entertainment, craft booths and various contests, it is a great place to stop by after taking that early morning hike or make it your own destination. Children will enjoy face painting, games and guest appearances from nearby Santa’s Workshop. The North Pole is located just around the corner so be prepared from some favorite characters to stop by. Horse and pony rides will round out some of the activities. The Festival of Colors always takes place the second Saturday in September. So join in the fun from 10 am-5 pm.

Be a Nature Detective: Bald-faced Hornets

Image
Did you know? • Bald-faced hornets ( Dolichovespula maculata)   will sting if you get in their way, but will not attack if left alone.  They are also beneficial insects. Hornets will aggressively attack  and sting any intruder disturbing the nest. • Bald-faced hornets are considered social wasp s as they live in groups. Paper wasps and yellow jackets are also social wasps. • The queen becomes active in spring. She will select a place for the nest. • The workers, queen and larvae are referred to as a colony . • Hornets' nests can be found in trees, the eaves of homes, attics, or exterior porches. It does not build its nest inside the nooks of buildings as do yellow jackets . • The bald-faced hornets' nest looks like a gray paper/clay ball . It can sometimes reach the size of a basketball. The inside is lined with individual cells, like a honey comb, where the queen will lay her eggs.  The nests are made by chewing up wood mixed with their saliva.

Family Activities: Hoss’s 28th Annual Author’s Night

Hoss’s Country Corner looms large at the junction of Routes 28N and 30 in Long Lake where the annual Author Night will take place this August 14 for its 28th year. Always held the second Tuesday in August the event has grown from a few to sometimes 80 authors in attendance. According to owner Lorrie Hosley, people now plan their vacations around attending this event. “This year there are 60 different authors gathered to meet people and sign books,” says Hosley. “Everyone is always under one tent.    People don’t have to buy books. They can bring their copy and get it personalized by the author. Christopher Shaw will be there along with other Adirondack singers and storytellers.” The event started when Hosley attended a Maitland DeSormo book signing at the Long Lake Town Hall. DeSormo suggested that Hoss’s Country Corner do something similar with more than one author. Hoss’s Author Night was born.
