Image
Okay, not really a fly but still trapped in a web. Here nature is at work right on the side of our house. We didn't even need to visit a mountain or trail to see nature at work. My son's only comment, "Wow!" Just waiting for a meal This insect struggles to free itself from the web The spider just patiently waits for the insect to tire out Breakfast, lunch and dinner Fast and efficient There you have it. Just another day in the lives of kids in the Adirondacks.

Adirondack Family: FREE Wildlife Awareness Day

Image
Steve Hall gives a raptor demonstration By Diane Chase Labor Day weekend in the Adirondacks is a perfect time to be able to have kids get up close and personal with the wildlife that surrounds  them as we hike, walk and play.  Not so long ago my children discovered a baby robin out of its nest and floundering near our front stoop. The mother robin circled nervously. It was a difficult decision to stand back and let nature take its course. My husband and I were operating with a barrage of opinions, a few old wives tales, two crying children and a curious dog. The baby was a fledgling and managed to seek refuge under the deck while its mother continued to feed it. We assume that it flew away one morning like it was supposed to, with no help from us. The most challenging part of those few days was keeping overzealous children from creating a bird sanctuary as the dog whined for a nibble of Robin Red-Breast Tartare. Nature Trail Trivia: Dragonflies and Damselflies

Image
By Diane Chase Can you name one difference between a damselfly and a dragonfly? Here are two insects that adults and kids can meet walking an  Adirondack nature trail  or canoeing on a pond . It's all in a name! Dragon flies will actually eat Damsel flies if given the chance. It is easy to remember if any fairy tales come to mind where the dragons capture the damsel (another word for young girl) Dragonfly at rest Another difference is that when a dragonfly lands with its wings spread out while the damselfly rests with wings tucked in like a bird. Adirondack Family Fun: Polo anyone?

Image
By Diane Chase This weekend the Adirondack Polo Club  in Westport, NY will hold its Leslie Cup to raise funds and awareness for High Peaks Hospice and Palliative Care. On September 4th the Club will donate proceeds to the Ronald McDonald House. Not only is this a fun activity for kids but also raises much needed funds for a worthy cause. According to Lonnie Cross, Adirondack Polo Club member, the club is in its fifth season though for the last two years has made Westport its summer home. Previously the club traveled to destinations as far away as New Orleans to participate in matches. When Cross purchased land from a golf facility he did so with the purpose of providing a different local attraction for the community. “We are polo enthusiasts that are used to traveling. This year we have played matches on the other side of the lake with the Sugerbush Polo Club as well as in Saratoga. Our players come from different backgrounds,” says Cross. “We have careers beyond polo so this is

Paraskevidekatriaphobia anyone?

"Touch wood, cross your fingers, and pop that lucky rabbit’s foot in your pocket – and there will be an almost five-to-one chance that you will not then be troubled today with paraskevidekatriaphobia or fear of Friday the 13th." ~Tim Radford, The Guardian

Adirondack Ice Cream: Donnelly's Ice Cream Flavors!

Image
Each day one flavor is offered, twisted with vanilla. Anything not sold daily is packed into containers for sale in the dairy case. This year Donnelly’s will sell an estimated 5,000 gallons of ice cream. Please pick a size, the flavor has already been decided for you. Since 1920, the Donnelly family has been involved in the dairy industry. But it was in 1953, after two aunts went to a dairy equipment show, that Donnelly’s Corner became synonymous with ice cream. Look to see the original Cherry Burrell ice cream machine still in use today. It is taken apart and sanitized daily then filled with the delicious mixture providing us with the flavor of the day. Donnelly’s soft ice cream is located at the intersection of Routes 86 and 186, outside of Saranac Lake. Adirondack Shakespeare in the Park

Image
Free Shakespeare in the Adirondack Park is on the road for its second year presenting live performances in various outdoor venues throughout the Park. For those in the Tri-Lakes it will all start tomorrow at White Pines Camp in Paul Smiths. The Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts in Blue Mountain Lake is bringing this performance to 20 towns within the Blue Line so don’t fret, there is plenty of opportunity to see this version of “Twelfth Night.” Last year’s performance of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” was a 45-minute romp within an Adirondack setting, lumberjacks and even a back-flipping Robin Goodfellow in snowshoes. This year’s play of mistaken identities will take us to a 1950s lakeside camp where Viola will find her way ashore during a 4th of July celebration. Believing her twin brother, Sebastian, did not survive the storm Viola dresses like a boy and all sorts of hijinks commence. This shortened version is a mixture of professional and amateur actors.
