Many Hands Make Light Work

Please remember those in need. If you wish to donate to victims of Hurricane Sandy here are some helpful links. I will add more as situations change. I know many people in the Adirondacks received help during Hurricane Irene and know it is our turn to help. Where to get gas?  Salvation Army is providing mobile feeding units and shelters along the East Coast Red Cross Feeding America is distributing emergency food, water and supplies AmeriCares is providing medicine and other supplies World Vision has flood clean-up kits, personal hygiene items and food kits for hurricane victims Save the Children provides relief to families with children Other places and organizations are looking for volunteers. There are also collection places to donate items so it is certainly a good time to clean out our closets and pantries.

All sorts of businesses have stepped up to help those in need. Don't worry if you can't attend an event. You can donate online for the Keene/Keene Valley Recover Fund  or mail a check for the Jay/AuSable Flood Recover Fund   b y sending a check or money order with the notation “UJFR” to:  Town of Jay Irene Relief Fund – P.O. Box 730 – Ausable Forks, NY 12912 Today in Lake Placid, September 14, 2011 at 5:30 p.m.  This event is open to the public with a $10 donation suggested. Adirondack Hikes: New Slide on 46er High Peak Cascade Mountain due to Tropical Storm Irene

Cascade Mountain 4098' #36 of 46 Adirondack (Adk) High Peaks Distance = 2.4 miles to summit  The waterfall on Cascade Mountain has widened due to effects of Tropical Storm Irene According to the DEC  THE EASTERN ZONE of the HIGH PEAKS WILDERNESS, GIANT MOUNTAIN WILDERNESS and DIX MOUNTAIN WILDERNESS are closed through Labor Day Weekend and beyond due to dangerous conditions and extensive damage to trails and interior infrastructure. DEC intends to fully enforce this closure . Over the next several weeks DEC will be evaluating the conditions of all trails in the closed areas, prioritize work to rehabilitate trails and determine what trails may be reopened for public use. TRAIL ADVISORIES (8/31) : Hurricane Irene has created dangerous conditions across most of the Eastern Adirondacks including flooding, bridge wash outs, trail wash outs and blow down of trees and other debris. Hurricane Irene floods Keene/Keene Valley area Marcy Dam Bridge lost

By Diane Chase This WPTZ video  of the flooding shows just some of the damage around the Adirondack High Peaks area.  Here are more pictures as well as a video of the bridge around the Whiteface/Lake Placid Olympic Ski Jumps. So much flooding, so much to overcome. Phil Brown with Adirondack Explorer reports on the loss of the Marcy Dam Bridge and devastation to the Adirondack Loj road. Update:  The Cloudsplitter Gondola and Veteran's Memorial Highway are currently closed while damage from Irene is accessed. Hurricane Irene, the Adirondacks and NYS Campgrounds closures

From the DEC  Hurricane Irene Safety and Cleanup Information  Hiking and Camping Advisory Due to anticipated hazardous weather from Hurricane Irene,   all New York State operated  campgrounds  in the Catskill and Adirondack Park will be closed effective Saturday, 8/27 at 12 noon. All current reservations through Sunday, 8/28 are cancelled.  Please check this website and call ahead for campground status for all reservations beginning Monday, 8/29.
