Gene Wilder Tribute Set For Lake Placid Film Forum Family Matinee
The Adirondack Film Society opens this weekend with its annual Lake Placid Film Forum, June 7-11, 2017 with a mixture of international flavor, educational aspects, and a nod to its hometown Winter Olympic roots. Last night’s opening brought out locals and visitors alike to the Palace Theater for a free screening of “Eagle Eddy.”
With an impressive lineup of new and encore films, The Lake Placid Film Forum provides a distinctive international flavor to this wet, Adirondack spring.
With directors and producers coming as far afield as Moscow and Havana, one unique Adirondack aspect will be in the panel discussion at the Sunday free showing on the original version of “Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.”
With a nod to Gene Wilder, the Adirondack Film Society has procured the original Charlie Bucket, Dr. Peter Ostrum, to join the panel and discuss his childhood film role alongside Wilder.
According to Adirondack Film Society’s Operations Manager Fred Balzac, Ostrum lives in Lowville NY and works as a large animal veterinarian. Ostrum never pursed a career in acting, even after the extreme popularity of the 1971 film.

“We are encouraging families to come and join Peter for this tribute to Gene Wilder,” says Balzac. “He will talk about his experience with Wilder and on the film. He is a vet and very busy, working everyday with large animals. We are honored that he could be a part of this. We are thrilled and looking forward to having children there that haven’t seen this version of the film or haven’t seen it on the big screen. Many other people saw this film when it first came out so this showing of Willie Wonka is going to bring back memories and be special. I consider it one highpoint of many highpoints of the Film Festival.”
The Sunday, June 11, free showing of Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory will begin at 11 am at the Lake Placid Palace Theatre. The free showing is co-sponsored by Desperados and The Palace Theatre. The Q and A with Dr. Peter Ostrum, following the film, will be moderated by Balzac.
